Portraits
The elusive self portrait
Self portraits run deep with people.
It’s hands down always the most emotional parts of my photography workshops.
How do we turn the lens towards ourselves, and meet our own gaze?
For years I had a templet, I stood just so, twisted my body a bit to the left or the right, and looked down. I liked the silhouette, and it was a comfortable position if anyone was photographing me, or I took a self portrait. I felt shy about it all, and terribly uncomfortable.
This post is not about lighting, although good lighting does wonders for storytelling, but you can read a little bit about lighting here, a post on food photography, it’s about positioning, and how to break out of what’s uncomfortable about turning the lens towards yourself, tips and tricks on how, and what that I’ve learned over the years.
Let’s begin.
